Lessons from Building Upstrive
When Upstrive began, it looked like a simple idea: a map of gyms, studios, and communities. But along the way, it became more than a directory — it became a mirror of the same lessons we learn in training.
Here are some of the lessons this climb has taught so far.
1. Start Where You Are
Upstrive started from simple, organic recommendations:
“Do you know a good yoga studio?”
“Which run club can I join?”
“Where can I find a physio?”
That spirit of accessibility is what keeps it alive. You don’t need to be ready or polished to begin — not in movement, and not in building something new.
2. Pace Yourself
In training, going all out every day leads to burnout. Building Upstrive has been the same. Some weeks felt like a sprint, others like a crawl. But every forward step mattered.
Progress isn’t about speed. It’s about finding a pace you can sustain — and trusting that rhythm.
3. Rest Is Part of the Climb
When building started to feel like a job, it was time to step back. Upstrive was born from curiosity and joy — and that spirit only stays alive when rest is honored.
Just like recovery days in training, pausing doesn’t mean quitting. It’s what makes the next push possible.
4. Know Your Why
This platform is dedicated to life’s everyday athletes — those starting out, rising again after setbacks, recovering from injury, or carrying the unseen weight of mental health struggles.
That why keeps the climb grounded. It’s not about building the biggest platform — it’s about making movement visible, accessible, and alive for everyone.
5. Joy in the Process
The real reward isn’t only in the milestones — the launch date, the first partnerships, the metrics. It’s in the small wins:
- A new contributor sharing a gym they love.
- A friend testing a feature and smiling.
- Seeing the map slowly come alive.
Progress isn’t always visible, but it’s always alive in the process.
6. We Climb Stronger Together
No one builds alone. From gym bros to yogis, triathletes to CrossFitters, friends have become contributors — sharing spaces, stories, and helping others discover them.
As one line from When Life Gives You Tangerines says:
“No one’s an island. Let’s go together.
If you go with others, a hundred miles will feel like ten.”
Upstrive already carries the fingerprints of many voices. That’s what makes it more than a directory. It’s a living map of movement.
Building Upstrive has been less about tech or design, and more about rhythm, patience, and community. The same lessons we carry in training are the ones that carry us here: start where you are, pace yourself, honor rest, know your why, find joy in the process, and climb together.
Because Upstrive isn’t about the grind. It’s about the climb — peaks, valleys, and the rhythm in between.
